Day 9. Lyons, KS

We left Larned at 10am and got to Lyons at 5:15.
Stiff wind, gray skies and cold temps as we leave Perkins in Great Bend. 33 miles  to Lyons, KS.

We're glad we decided to push on after our meal in Great Bend. The shift to heading straight east meant most of the headwind components of the blustery day disappeared. Now we just get blown around and have trouble warming up. It was an ok day but I expect we are probably a little depleted from our 105 miler yesterday but we're snuggling in for the night as I write this. There weren't many dinner choices in Lyons, especially on a Sunday night so I dined on a Chicken Ceasar salad and cup of chili from Wendy across the street. Angela went with the chicken sandwich combo meal. A good part of the town was dining there too.

A trucker who apparently passed us twice on the highway today saw us at Wendy's and started chatting us up. I don't usually think of long haul truck drivers as cyclist but this guy was part of a club down in Houston and very active in the MS150 there. He shared quite a few stories with us.

Tomorrow another day. We'll see what it brings. Ciao!!

  1. Glad you made your goal yesterday (Sunday). Thanks for the great details in your update, food and trucker/cyclist.
I’m just about finished with the second “pannier”, should work OK I think. Now I’m thinking and reading about a sun-shade for my helmet. I found a DIY for cutting up a cheap hat to fit under a standard helmet, so I’ll probably give that a try, (unless you and Angela veto it due to the ridiculous appearance) as I’m not a fan of sun-block lotion. I’m not real happy with my saddle comfort this year. During my winter bike maintenance I must have moved it, and the handlebars around, so I hope to play around a bit, and get it a bit more comfy. I’m also debating the need for rain pants, and whether they are water resistant or water proof. I have a very light and compact top (anorak) that is just wind and water resistant. Any thoughts about rain gear?
    Regards,
    John

    1. John, we are used to looking silly already wearing our spandex/Lycra bike kit in E. CO or KS so don't worry about what your wear, be comfortable. My Brooks seat is FINALLY softening up after +1000 miles on it this year. I hope you get yours adjusted or get your butt adjusted to it!😱
